• Over 90% of Hawaii’s energy needs are presently supplied by imported fossil fuel, making us the most fossil fuel-dependent state in the nation.
• Abundant sunshine, the nation’s highest electricity rates, and available government incentives combine to give Hawaii among the fastest payback rates for solar in the world. It is estimated that 12-14 MW of PV and 9,500 residential solar hot water systems were installed statewide in 2008. Hawaii’s first ‘utility-scale’ PV installation is located on Lanai, producing 1.2 MW of energy.
• According to an analysis by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, "...solar water heating is cost effective at any location in the Hawaiian islands." As of 2009, solar water heaters have been installed in some 80,000 homes and institutions throughout Hawai‘i. And thanks to the Solar Roofs Act—a landmark measure passed in 2008 requiring most new homes in Hawai‘i to be equipped with solar water heaters—that number is on the rise.
